Claiborne Taylor

Director, Center for Afterschool and Expanded Learning

Claiborne Taylor is an experienced trainer, presenter, and researcher. His background as an educator in both school day and out-of-school-time settings provides him with unique insights for bridging the learning day for underserved children and youth across the U.S., and those who work with them.

As director for Foundations' Center for Afterschool and Expanded Learning, Claiborne designs and delivers professional development programming for school leaders and educators. His trainings bring best practices to educators and build their capacity for improving expanded learning programs. He coordinates face-to-face trainings and leads Foundations' entire suite of trademarked "PD@your.desktop" live and on-demand training webinars. Topics range from strategies for boosting program quality and linking content with the school day, to promoting literacy, involving families, and more.

Claiborne leads Foundations' work with the U.S. Department of Education's You for Youth (Y4Y) program-a professional development web portal and online learning community for its 21st Century Community Learning Center grantees. Claiborne has designed a new cache of cutting-edge content for Y4Y, as well as face-to-face and web-based trainings that link research to practice. The practical tools on this web portal respond directly to the needs assessments of today's busy educators.

Currently, Claiborne is co-authoring a new Foundations professional development publication centered on classroom learning tools for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). He also co-authored Out-of-School Time: Leveraging Higher Education for Quality, a white paper by Foundations, Inc., in partnership with The After-School Corporation (TASC). This publication explores how partnerships between institutions of higher education and the OST field can strengthen the quality of children's educational opportunities beyond the school day.

Prior to joining Foundations, Claiborne worked in a variety of educational settings, including as an elementary and middle school teacher. He received his Master's in Education from Stanford University and a BA in American History from Washington and Lee University.
