The Center for Afterschool Education at Foundations Inc., an organization that offers professional development, technical assistance, tools and publications to thousands of practitioners and leaders in the out-of-school time field, has received a grant of $2.3 million to improve the educational quality of out-of-school time programs serving children and youth by training educators for the particular demands of afterschool. |

Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church and Martin Luther King High School are pleased to announce the creation of a unique learning initiative, Seeds for Learning: Urban Gardening at Martin Luther King High School. This urban gardening initiative, sponsored by Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, in partnership with Weavers Way Co-op and the Awbury Arboretum, will make it possible for students to plant, cultivate, harvest, and sell wholesome agricultural products and learn valuable academic, business, social, and citizenship skills. |

The Lenfest Foundation has awarded Foundations, Inc. a $2 million grant to fund a new, three-year mentoring and youth development program, called the Northwest University Scholars Project. The program includes school-based youth mentoring provided by newly recruited “coaches,” in addition to afterschool programming, and summer programs for up to 250 students entering 7th, 8th, and 9th grade next September in four Northwest Philadelphia schools: West Oak Lane Charter School, John L. Kinsey Elementary School, Francis P. Pastorius Elementary School, and Martin Luther King High School. |

In November 2007 students, staff and the community gathered at Martin Luther King High School to dedicate a beautiful exterior mural painted at the school this past summer by a group of MLK High School students and artists from the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia. Representatives acknowledged and thanked the artists and students who created the mural, shared the story of its meaning, and reviewed the artistic development process with the school and surrounding community. |
