The use of Reading Success Plans (RSP) is an effective way for teachers to come together to review individual students' data and design appropriate interventions to address instructional, health, and attendance issues. Engage with MOUSE Squad Student Tech Leadership students and their coordinator to learn how a nonprofit program teaches them about the "T" in STEM, technology, and also teamwork and problem solving. Attendees will participate in "Computer in a Box" and other project-based activities and do selected activities from the online curriculum modules - problem solving, communications, and technology - so that they can determine whether the program would be a fit for their afterschool setting.

Attend this session to learn how a novice group of teachers and administrators developed a 21st CCLC after school program with tremendous student and teacher participation. Participants will receive a complete manual with steps to emulate this successful program that boasts a wide variety of classes and outstanding community partnerships.
Children need to be educated on movement skills the same way they need to be educated in math, science, or reading. In this session, you will learn how to use a wide variety of activities to get children of all ages up, moving, and having fun in and out of school. Join us as GenMove takes traditional games and sports to a new level with activities that are designed so that everyone has the opportunity to be successful thus increasing interest levels and participation.
This interactive session explores the criteria for selecting high-quality multicultural literature and presents simple strategies to help students build comprehension and vocabulary skills by engaging in reading that is meaningful to them. Participants will learn how to select rich, age-appropriate stories that appeal to a diverse student population. They will also observe and practice easy-to-implement fun strategies that enhance student interaction and foster a love for reading, even among struggling and reluctant readers. Ideas for literature-based art, writing, and critical-thinking skills will be featured. In addition, participants will learn about the California After School Resource Center's website, lending library, on-line trainings, and other technical assistance services for after school programs.
The use of Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) during the regular school day has been shown to improve student behavior and academic performance. However, such framework is typically not administered afterschool. In this session, participants will learn about PBIS and develop strategies that will enhance the quality of their program.
Bringing in volunteers should be an enhancement to your program, not a burden. Come and learn the 3 R's of volunteer management: Recruitment, Retention, Recognition, and walk away with concrete steps on how to successfully incorporate a sustainable volunteer system into your program.
Middle school is a critical time for youth and may be the last intervention point for students at risk of dropping out of high school. Join us to learn best practices for running fun and engaging activities to educate students on why high school matters, options after high school, and career exploration.
Educators will be introduced to Tanenbaum's K-6 World Olympics curriculum, which provides tools to teach young people the value of respecting differences, including religious differences, to appreciate what makes them unique, and to celebrate their commonalities. Participants will come away with an understanding of how to teach cultural curiosity and respect and discuss differences. Additionally, they will learn practical tools and lessons to incorporate in their daily work and in the prevention of bullying, harassment, and intolerance in their afterschool settings - including those motivated by religion.
