At the Center for Afterschool and Expanded Learning, we believe it takes practice to know practice—and especially to teach it. Staff at the Center know practice from years of experience in afterschool, school teaching, administration, parks and recreation, museum education, and more. And we keep learning, by operating pre-K through high school afterschool programs at selected sites in Philadelphia, PA.

Through these programs, we test approaches, content and staff development in the real world of tight budgets, tight timelines and high expectations. The experiences deeply inform our publications, trainings and technical assistance across the country.

Our elementary programs offer an environment of active, engaged learning. Arts, field trips and a significant service-learning component are essential features. Homework time extends beyond the assignments to help children learn to manage time, track assignments, and take responsibility.

The Prep Zone encompasses four Philadelphia charter high schools. It applies research and experience to a new program design tailored specifically to high school students.

Foundations is proud to partner with a farming co-op, a local church, and other community and business leaders to implement the Seeds for Learning initiative which provides unique project-based learning opportunities for students at Martin Luther King HS and throughout Northwest Philadelphia.

Preparing today’s youth to thrive in the workplace of the 21st century requires new thinking and creative solutions—both are main ingredients of the Philadelphia Center for Arts and Technology (PCAT).
