Music Programs at Martin Luther King High School
Returning the Magic of Song
It is widely believed, especially at Foundations, that students who receive music instruction have better self-esteem, creativity, and social skills—all of which are critical to success in both school and life. Yet for more than a decade, students at Martin Luther King High School (MLKHS) had no formal music program.
That all changed with a partnership between Foundations and Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church. The church graciously offered the services of its music director to develop a state-of-the-art music agenda at MLKHS.
Every day before, during, and after school, students now have opportunities to participate in vocal, choir, and instrumental lessons. Three instructors offer lessons in string, woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments for academic credit, free of charge.
In the 2009-2010 school year, The Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra—a multicultural community-based ensemble—will begin offering workshops on orchestral conducting at MLKHS to supplement music instruction and help students further boost their confidence and self-esteem.
No music program would be complete without performances and concerts.
MLKHS students have opportunities to perform before parents, teachers, area residents, and other students. They have even joined peers from other area schools to perform with the Philadelphia Orchestra during the annual Dr. Martin Luther King tribute concert held at MLKHS.
