Designing U

The mission of Designing U is to foster responsible, employable youth with the 21st Century skills
required to enter the job market.

Designing U is a highly selective afterschool program for 9th and 10th graders. Designing U develops students’ capacity to employ the skills needed to succeed in the modern economy, while allowing them to build their “brand”. Over the course of the year, students participate in four eight-week units, which include: Architectural and Interior Design, Music Production and Sound Engineering, Fashion Design, and Media Design. Each unit is comprised of several small projects that build students’ ability to use the tools, techniques, and technology required within the respective field, culminating in the creation of a larger capstone project at the end of each unit. This structure allows students to use cutting edge technology while they develop a portfolio of their work and write their own business plan. This program ultimately allows students to explore interests and simultaneously build marketable skills in preparation for post-secondary education programs.
